Welcome to Esquelito!

By Alex Colmenares - Game Design Director, VFX Artist & Level Designer

Esquelito is a Day of the Dead inspired 2D rhythm platformer where you play as a brave little skeleton set in the Mexican Underworld on a quest to save the people from a curse of sadness spread by the dastardly Oscurión. It is a game about spreading joy, familial bonds, traditional Mexican culture, and focused on giving the player a good time.

The very first time I came up with the idea of Esquelito was in my early college days. I was tasked with creating a project that appeared like a classic, pixel, 2D game level with a limited color palette. The project was not playable, and it was just a gif, but still it was the first true version of Esquelito. The project ended up looking like this.

Ever since I created this project the idea of an Esquelito video game would constantly occupy my mind. For a long time, it sat in brain and I thought about its story, mechanics, visual style, etc. However, I would then get to meet the wonderful people who loved my idea just as much as I did. The people who allowed my game to come to life with. These people and I are now Skeletal Sync.

So why are we making this game? I’m sure everyone on the team has their own reasons for working on Esquelito. For me it’s because I love and have grown attached to Esquelito, the idea is of my own creation. My team members love Esquelito and his character just as much as I do. Some of my team members are very interested in Mexcian culture. Some of my team members want to learn more about game engines and art making software. Some of my team members are perfecting their craft. And I think we all work on the game, because all of us show up to contribute to it too. We all show up to work hard and play hard.

So, come join us on this journey in the development of Esquelito. Over the course of the next few months, you will get to peer into the many areas of design and development that our devoted team members are working on. So, stay tuned and always strive to spread joy.
